Sore throats after Easter
It's at this time of the season that we see sore throats making a comeback. So why does this happen?
Well in TCM, it's all about having too much heat in your stomach. What heats your stomach?? Well....refined sugar and chocolates do. Easter eggs!!
As the Easter egg load lasts for quite a few days, maybe weeks, this builds the heat up in the stomach, which rises up to the back of the throat. This sort of sore throat presents as a very dry and hot sensation which can easily turn into tonsillitis.
It happens to children mostly and this is because they consume more chocolate eggs and kids are naturally hot bodied. Though if an adult has an underlying heat constitution then it will most likely present quickly as well.
What to do....Moderate the intake of chocolate, and if a sore throat presents then all chocolate fun must stop as it will only make it worse.
The other side of the coin with sore throats at this time of year, is that the season is changing. This brings hot one day, cold the next, then windy, then back to muggy/sweaty weather. Add a whole lot of refined sugar and chocolate to the system and then the immune system is under the hammer, which means it will not be able to look after itself when a chill enters the body. Thus a cold and sore throat. Interesting don't you think?
I always dose my kids up with probiotics before Easter and moderating the Easter egg load is best. Plus lots of water and healthy eating. This helps the body cope, as sugar is no good for any of us in intense quantities.
If you do get a sore throat, gargle with salty water or organic apple cider vinegar. Vitamin C, turmeric, garlic and any other immune builders will help as well. Plus rest and fresh water.
Enjoy this festive time and I hope you all stay healthy!
Best, Tabitha
